Article: Putting mums before millionaires

Lucy_Powell_parl_default11.jpg.ashx.jpgAs a working mum with three kids, I know first hand how tough juggling work and family life can be. It doesn’t help that we’re living through a cost-of-living crisis, where our wages no longer cover essential daily costs such as paying the electricity bills or putting food on the table.

David Cameron doesn’t seem to be trying to make life easier for working parents. The cost of childcare is up by 30 per cent and there are now 35,000 fewer childcare places since 2010. It’s plain to see that life for many families is getting harder under this government.

I’m working as Labour’s shadow minister for childcare and children to fight to make life better for families across the country. We know that families are under pressure right now -- which is why Labour plans to do things differently:

•Labour would expand free childcare to 25 hours per week for every child aged three or four with working parents;
•Labour would introduce a primary childcare guarantee to help mums and dads find before and after school childcare at their local school or nearby;
•Labour would freeze gas and electricity bills until 2017 -- so you don’t have to make the choice between heating your home and putting food on the table.

We need a government that would put mums before millionaires: a Labour government. You can help us get there by letting us know you’re in. Join us: http://action.labour.org.uk/with-us To all the other mums out there: Happy Mother’s Day!
