Lucy has today written to the Prime Minister David Cameron asking him to think again about the Government's approach to the Syrian refugee crisis and for the UK to accept it's fair share of those fleeing violence.
Lucy's letter to the Prime Minister is below;

Dear Prime Minister
Re: The Syrian Refugee Crisis
Like many people I have been shocked and upset to see the images of people fleeing from Syria and the humanitarian crisis unfolding. I am sure that these images will have had an impact on you as well and I am writing to you to urge you to think again about the Government’s approach to accepting Syrian refugees fleeing violence.
Whilst I accept that Britain is playing its part in supporting Syria’s neighbouring countries to cope with the crisis, part of the solution must be that every country across the EU accept and welcome a fair proportion of Syrians fleeing their homes.
Britain has a proud record of welcoming refugees- from Jewish people fleeing the holocaust, to Kosovans and Somalians fleeing from more recent conflicts- all of whom have been welcomed in Manchester where I represent, and have contributed to a history of the city as a refuge from violence. I know that I speak for many when I say that our city would welcome playing its part as part of a fairer approach from the UK Government.
I met with representatives from across the Syrian community in Manchester earlier this week to celebrate the contribution they make to our city but also to highlight the huge problems that friends, family and loved ones face in Syria. At this event I was embarrassed and ashamed by our Government’s record in allowing Syrian refugees into the country.
The crisis is a human one and I believe that the UK has a moral obligation to do more to accept and welcome Syrians.
I would appreciate your urgent response.
Lucy Powell MP
