Lucy Powell MP calls West Coast Main Line Franchise process a “shambles”

Virgin-Trains-Run-In-Scot-008.jpg.ashx.jpgManchester Central MP and new member of the Transport Select Committee Lucy Powell today demanded that the Government take responsibility for the incompetence which has cost millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money and put investment in Manchester at risk.

The Government has admitted that the mistakes will leave the taxpayer with a bill in excess of £40 million.

Speaking in the House of Commons following a Statement on the West Coast Main Line Franchise,

Lucy Powell MP for Manchester Central and new member of the Transport Select Committee said;

“It is clear what a complete shambles this whole affair has been. Valuable time as well as millions of pounds have been lost.

The frequent, fast and reliable trains provided by West Coast Mainline service are critical to the Greater Manchester economy.

With nearly 3 years delay until the new franchise will be on track, vital investment decisions will put the service in serious jeopardy. Something our economy can ill afford.

The government have serious questions to answer and someone should take responsibility for it, urgently.”
