Today, Lucy Powell MP hosted an open surgery in Asda Hulme discussing welfare reform with constituents. Along with Councillors Nigel Murphy and Alistair Cox, Lucy spoke to residents about a number of issues, particularly the rising cost of living and welfare cuts.
Constituents had the opportunity to voice their opinions on Government spending cuts and seek advice if they have been affected by changing legislation. With more people hit by the bedroom tax in Manchester Central than any other constituency in the UK, it was obviously a huge concern.
Ms Powell asked local residents to fill in a survey regarding living costs, benefit and tax credit changes and areas of concern- for example an increase in utility bills.
Lucy Powell MP said “It was great to get out in the community and speak to local people about the issues that are really worrying them. I hope the information we offered was useful. In this difficult economic climate, it is important that people in Manchester Central know that we are on their side”
