Lucy has joined a number of North West MPs and MEPs in signing a joint statement on fracking. The statement, organised by Friends of the Earth, comes as Lancashire County Council prepares to decide whether or not to grant permission for fracking to take place near the Fylde Coast. Expressing concerns about the risks posed both to the environment and to the health of local residents, Lucy said:
It's incredibly important that the possible health risks associated with fracking and its impact on the environment are properly investigated before any work goes ahead. That's why I'm signing the statement today to draw attention to the issue and call on the government to impose a moratorium on fracking until the safety of residents can be assured with scientific evidence. It's extremely concerning that so many licenses are being approved before the effects are fully understood and therefore I'm supporting Friends of the Earth's campaign to put a stop to the plans until stronger evidence of its safety can be provided.
Joint statement on fracking from North West MPs & MEPs:
We have serious concerns about the risks that fracking poses to people’s health and the environment.
We believe that no fracking should take place until the health and climate impacts have been properly assessed.
We therefore call for any fracking applications to be withdrawn or refused planning permission.
