Lucy takes part in Manchester Pride Parade 2013 but warns about "stark contrast" with LGBT rights in Russia

pride-group11.jpg.ashx.jpgLucy took part in the Manchester Pride Parade along with fellow MPs and LGBT Labour to show her support for LGBT rights both at home and abroad.

She also took the opportunity to write to the Foreign Secretary to press him to do more to prevent the deteriorating situation with LGBT rights in Russia.

Lucy Powell MP for Manchester Central said;

“Manchester is renowned for being a gay friendly city and this is something us Mancunians are very proud of.

“Manchester’s Pride is a chance for us to have fun and to reflect on the advances we have made in the UK, including most recently with the passage of equal marriage legislation.”

“However it also highlights a stark contrast with the situation in Russia, where the rights of gay people seem to be being taken away rather than strengthened.”

“I have written to the Foreign Secretary to ask him to do more to pressure the Russian Government and to promote equality on behalf of myself and the many constituents who feel strongly about this.”

“I want the UK to be proud of its own record of gay rights but also proud to promote them internationally.”
