Lucy Welcomes Government U-turn on Support for Young Carers

Anna_Turley_and_Redcar_young_carers.jpg.ashx.jpgLucy Powell MP for Manchester Central and one of the sponsors of an amendment to the Children and Families Bill at Committee stage to improve care and support for young carers has commented on a Government Written Ministerial Statement this morning on young carers. Lucy Powell MP said:

"I welcome this news from Edward Timpson MP on changes in the law to improve assessment and support of young carers. When I called for changes to the Children and Families Bill alongside Robert Buckland MP and Annette Brooke MP earlier in the year the Government weren't prepared to listen. It is good news for young carers across the country and a testament to the campaigning work of the National Young Carers Coalition that the Government have thought twice.

We know that young carers face a tough start in life, sometimes disadvantaged by their caring roles. This new amendment to the Children and Families Bill will create real protections for young people with a caring role helping them to have a childhood and receive the right care and support to reduce their caring roles. We now need to see a step change in the identification and support for young carers across the board so that schools, the health service, voluntary organisations and local authorities can make a difference for young carers futures."
