Commenting on the debate in Westminster House today on the future of the Museum of Science and Industry, Lucy Powell MP said:
“I want to thank my honourable Friend the Member for Oldham East and Saddleworth for securing this important debate about the future of one of the jewels in the crown of Manchester’s tourist trade. I visited the Museum this weekend with my children. The Museum was packed with children and parents, enjoying this fantastic free resource and bringing science to life. I know what a valuable resource it is to schools as well as adding great value to the local economy.
That it was ever under threat is a travesty of this Government’s own making. Indeed, it beggars belief that not a single Minister in the DCMS has visited MOSI or the other Science Museum Group museums as far as transparency data on the DCMS website shows. I am pleased that the Minister recently confirmed that MOSI is safe but I hope the Minister can also reassure colleagues on this side of the House and the people of Manchester that this museum will remain a free attraction and they will provide sufficient funding in future years. I would challenge Minister to visit MOSI and see this for themselves.”
